Pay Phones fascinate me. I can remember when they were an integral part of our everyday life. If you weren’t at home and you needed to contact someone you used a pay phone. Now for the most part they sit in a state of decay neglected often vandalized and in many cases just a shell of metal hardware left behind by some bankrupt or negligent company. There are literally thousands of abandoned pay phones littering our country.
The genesis of this project happened some years ago. I took a picture of a pay phone with my then iPhone 3. The light was just right. The Pay phone was just right. Exactly as it was supposed to be. I looked at the picture on the screen of the phone and the irony struck me to my core. I had just taken a picture of the thing, the pay phone, with the thing, the cellphone, that killed the thing.
I’ve been taking pictures of them ever since.
